Stagnant and Docile FASHION IS FAKE

PRESS RELEASE

SAMIA MALIK ihtgw

May 2012

Collection name: Stagnant and Docile

FASHION IS FAKE

In times when there's unlimited amounts of material available to buy, choices are continuously on the rise. Leaves consumers confused, number of unnecessary items available, is without a doubt detrimental to human condition;  mass contribution to the developed worlds depression. These are a few banal points that come along with consumption culture. It is essential to observe, other futile conditions consumption culture has created: stagnant and docile  environment - no movement, people are frozen in a frenzy about what they can consume next.

FASHION IS FAKE: recent ihtgw project, consists of political street art. Questioning and reminding that fashion industry is not what it looks. Full of extreme lies, thoughtless  contradictions and hypocrisy. Seeing an image of a model wearing garments with design details, made out of amazing fabrics. But what this image does not include:  person who made the fabric, was very likely a child being paid slave wages in Uzbekistan. Garment was sewn by a women, possibly in India or China who works 7 days a week, and earns possibly 20p an hour.

FASHION IS FALSE! NO LIES!

FALSE FASHION

I suppose you can say; I don't have much agreement with mediocre ways of fashion: if fashion is what it is popular, or what is popular is fashion. At the same time I am not suggesting that people: chop their grannies curtains to wear, to gurgitate fashion individuality. Stating that:'FASHION IS FLASE', I am simply implying that general essence, and message of fashion is false/ fake. These days and in the 14th century, fashion was a reflection of changes in time, and an elitist status symbol. In the 15th century adorning and hairstyles 'became complex'. I imagine in 2012 the average person who thinks they're trend conscious, want to see themselves as advanced modern human beings. Different and more civilized than their ancestors in the 15th century.

But what is the real difference, fashion is still language of the extremist narcissist, without a doubt to certain degree a massive symbol of elitism, just as it was in the 14th century. So friends my question is: WHAT IS THE FUSS ABOUT? I predict the future generations, who hopefully will be more civilized than us. Those generation will look down on us, 'civilized modern people' in 2012, and think that we were just as ignorant or more ignorant than our ancestors. Not only were we extreme narcissist, but also made up celebrity magazines. Polluted our landscapes with huge billboards, with images of celebrities who in reality were not smart at all, and we also thoughtlessly copied what they wore. Brought our garments from businesses who had no morals to the nth degree. For example luxury brands such as: Mulberry/ Louis Vuitton/ Marc Jacobs who get their products manufactured in eastern countries for a few pennies and sell them for hundreds of pounds.

SAMIA MALIK ihtgw interview by Sade Aknife

Huge thanks to Sade Aknife, for going through this interview and filming this 3 times!

After being partially anonymous for years, in past year a few friends grilling me to break away from anonymous front. And battle of being an anonymous creative female, which in this time and age; unfortunately only has certain amount of life span!

Coming into 10 years since ihtgw started, I thought it would be right bench mark to introduce myself. That started with blog shoot with: The Style Scout, and then you tube interview below with my assistant Sade.

Why we had to film this 3 times:
Day 1: I was on a wrong mode. Day 2: interview was fine (part 1), but 10 minutes was accidently deleted by me. Day 3: success (part 2/3), but I forgot to mention a few important points, so I recorded them on own computer (part 4).

FREE BABAR AHMAD, PLEASE SIGN! TAHNKS!

Free Babar Ahmad: The Official Campaign Site to Put Babar Ahmad on Trial in the UK

Babar Ahmad is a 37 year old British Muslim and the longest detained-without-charge British detainee held as part of the global ‘war on terror’. In December 2003 Babar was arrested at his London home under anti-terror legislation. By the time he reached the police station Babar had sustained at least 73 forensically recorded injuries, including bleeding in his ears and urine. Six days later he was released without charge.

In August 2004 Babar was re-arrested in London and taken to prison pursuant to an extradition request from the US under the controversial, no-evidence-required, Extradition Act 2003. The US has alleged that in the 1990s Babar was a supporter of “terrorism”. Babar denies any involvement in terrorism. He has now been in prison for six years even though he has not been charged in the UK.

    DON'T WASTE COTTON September 2011

    • Cotton is a fabric that we wear and see around us. Many of us will rarely ever closely look at fabric on our body and try to workout how it was made or where it came from. Let alone know this fact: 'The proud Uzbek cotton harvest is picked courtesy of the forced labour of the country's and young adults.' Lucy Siegle. These days cotton is more disposable than ever before. We can go to shops buy as many cotton garments we want, without facing hardship unlike people who make it.

Collection: All sweat tops are printed through a D.I.Y studio method. All trousers are made in London studio from cotton, focusing on a sustainable, classic and practical cut.
