Stagnant and Docile FASHION IS FAKE

PRESS RELEASE

SAMIA MALIK ihtgw

May 2012

Collection name: Stagnant and Docile

FASHION IS FAKE

In times when there's unlimited amounts of material available to buy, choices are continuously on the rise. Leaves consumers confused, number of unnecessary items available, is without a doubt detrimental to human condition;  mass contribution to the developed worlds depression. These are a few banal points that come along with consumption culture. It is essential to observe, other futile conditions consumption culture has created: stagnant and docile  environment - no movement, people are frozen in a frenzy about what they can consume next.

FASHION IS FAKE: recent ihtgw project, consists of political street art. Questioning and reminding that fashion industry is not what it looks. Full of extreme lies, thoughtless  contradictions and hypocrisy. Seeing an image of a model wearing garments with design details, made out of amazing fabrics. But what this image does not include:  person who made the fabric, was very likely a child being paid slave wages in Uzbekistan. Garment was sewn by a women, possibly in India or China who works 7 days a week, and earns possibly 20p an hour.
